Started in 2001, the .NAME universal top-level domain name extension is the sole TLD supposed to be for personal sites only. These domain names can consist of personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other labels people are famous by. At first, solely third-level registrations were possible, so if you wanted to secure john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Already bought 3rd-level names remained running.
